These paintings are about desire and restraint. Often I try to incorporate a boundary within the composition – a prohibition symbol like an X or a slash, stripes that obfuscate the layers below, edges that seek to compress or contain the energy at the center of a work. Usually these boundaries get overrun. Effusive slabs, slashes or curls of paint breach these carefully constructed borders. Excess is triumphant.
